How to Get Sumter County Death Certificates

Three methods are available for getting a Sumter County death certificate. You can walk in to the health department, mail a request, or order online. The base cost stays the same regardless of how you order.

For in-person service, visit the health department at 1601 North MLK Jr. Boulevard, Suite 100, in Americus. Bring your photo ID and the full name of the person who died, along with the date and place of death. If the record is in the system, you can get your certified copy the same day. The fee is $25 for the first copy and $5 for each extra copy on the same order. The office takes cash, credit cards, and debit cards. Personal checks are not accepted for death record orders.

Mail orders go to the state office in Atlanta. Complete Form 3912 from the Georgia DPH and include a money order or certified check for $25. Send it to 1680 Phoenix Blvd, Suite 100, Atlanta, GA 30349. Processing runs 8 to 10 weeks, and all orders ship by first class USPS.

Note: If no matching record is found, the state sends a "not on file" letter. The $25 search fee is not given back.

Some offer expedited shipping, but the state processing time stays the same no matter who takes the order. Who Can Get Death Certificates in Sumter County

Georgia law defines who can receive a certified death certificate. Under OCGA § 31-10-25, certified copies are for people with a direct and tangible interest in the record. This includes the spouse, adult children, parents, siblings, grandparents, and grandchildren. Legal representatives and insurance beneficiaries also qualify.

Members of the public can still order a copy. The public version is on plain paper with the Social Security number removed. It works for genealogy and general lookups but not for legal matters such as settling estates. For a certified copy from Sumter County, you must prove your connection to the deceased. A birth certificate, marriage license, or court order meets this requirement.

Note: Every request at the Sumter County Health Department requires a valid photo ID.

Under OCGA § 31-10-15, the funeral director files the certificate within 72 hours of taking custody. The attending physician signs the medical certification covering cause and manner of death. If the cause cannot be set within 48 hours, "pending" is entered on the form until the review is done.

After local filing, the Sumter County death certificate goes to the State Office of Vital Records in Atlanta for central registration. Under OCGA § 31-10-26, both the state registrar and the local custodian can issue certified copies from that point. You can get a Sumter County death certificate from either the Americus health department or the state office in Atlanta. Both are equally valid for legal purposes.

If a Sumter County resident dies in another part of Georgia, a copy of the death certificate also gets sent to this county. So the Americus office may hold records for local residents who died elsewhere in the state.
